FAQs
I’ve never talked to anyone. I’m used to handling things on my own. Aren’t people who go to therapy weak?
Not at all. Everyone needs help now and then. Asking for help is courageous.
What’s the difference between talking to you or my best friend or family?
A mental health professional can help you approach your situation in a new way– teach you new skills, gain different perspectives, listen to you without judgment or expectations, and help you listen to yourself. Furthermore, counseling is completely confidential. You won’t have to worry about others “knowing my business.”
Why shouldn’t I just take medication?
Medication can be effective but it cannot solve all issues. Sometimes medication is needed in conjunction with counseling. Our work together is designed to explore the underlying reasons for your challenges and identify strengths and strategies to help you accomplish your personal goals.
How long will it take?
Everyone’s circumstances are unique. The length of time counseling takes to accomplish your goals depends on your desire for personal growth and the circumstances that are motivating you to seek counseling in the first place.
What can I expect at my first appointment?
Prior to the first appointment, you will be invited to a secure online portal to complete a brief questionnaire asking about why you are seeking therapy, what symptoms you are experiencing, and what your goals are for therapy. The therapist will use this as a working document at your first session where you will have an opportunity to share more information enabling the therapist to better understand your situation and determine next steps. The appointment is conversational and you can share as little or as much as you feel comfortable giving you a chance to learn more about the therapist and build trust.
